Adaptation

Well, this is my second post from my new school, typed in the third week of my stay here. I'm not going to bother counting any more, because it's going to get tedious if I do so for the next year and a half.
Basically, nothing much has changed in my life since the last post; I'm still scouting around for cheap stuff (right now my list has 'sugar' on the topmost bit. I ran out of it several days ago) and I've found some places that give students special prices.
It's very rainy now in this area, and I've decided that bringing two umbrellas along with me wasn't that bad an error of judgement. Even with my hair (it's so densely packed that it's waterproof), I still get soaked to the skin. And believe me, I'm not pretty soaked to the skin. In fact I'm not pretty at all, but that's another matter.
A lot of people are coming out of the Torture Camps again, and this time they're all flocking to my class in droves; in the last two weeks alone my class has increased by about 4%. That's three people, all wearing caps to hide their hair. It almost seems that they think that shorn heads shouldn't be seen in public, which is probably why people used to exclaim in horror everytime I went for a haircut. (To save money, I always had my hair cut as closely as possible.)
I've made a few new friends (thank God), and they know a little English, but they're not my old circle. Nothing like it at all, in fact. One of them (a female, but don't you dare get any funny ideas) is also a Sabahan, like me--in fact her old school was within one kilometre of mine--but she and I are poles apart. For one thing, she can't stand my snobbing.
It's an unshakable habit, and I actually quite enjoy it. Kelvin was the one who introduced me to the wonderful world of meaningless put-downs, actually, and then the Pig got turned into my sparring partner. It's...interesting, actually, that I can get pleasure out of continually jabbing at people without meaning a word of it, but then maybe it appeals to my sadistic side.
I wonder why my family has suddenly got an urge to separate and multiply. First I got sent here (the reason was to grow up and become independent), then now my parents and my two youngest siblings are in Shanghai (to keep my dad, who works there, company). And then now, almost everytime I see them online (we chat sometimes), an inevitable question comes up.
"Have you got a girlfriend (smirk smirk, grin grin, prod prod)?"
My reply is always in the negative, roll eyes roll eyes, shake head shake head, frown frown. As if I wanted entanglement of any sort. The studies are bad enough--do I need yet more stress? A resounding NO.
Yes, the studies are bad. After the first week (the lecturers called it the honeymoon week, during which they only taught the basics v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y), the lecturers have decided as one body to put us into hyperdrive and proceed to fill up the unused 70% of our brains with little-known facts that are difficult to remember and even harder to understand.
I was quite surprised this morning when the lecturer announced that he had only spent four hours lecturing us, because when I looked, I had filled up about eight pages of notes. Now my writing is minuscule; when I wrote essays, I had to adopt a different handwriting because it was completely illegible to the teacher. I'm talking three-lines-of-script-in-one-line-of-foolscap sheet small here.
And I had filled up eight pages with four hours' of notes. That's only for Biology, mind you. I think I'm going to have to become the bookstore's biggest consumer of legal pads and exercise books. And by the time the examinations roll around, I'm probably going to be even more muscular than Schwarzenegger (did I spell that right?) from lugging my bag around campus.
And the following are some really skewed test results; well, some of them are skewed, anyway. Most of them are wrong in the extreme, but some are right. I'm not telling which is which, though!

Hmm. I'm with you there. I'm still deciding whether this pastime ought to be cultivated though.
I'm of two minds about it myself...of course, it's not exactly saintly...
